0.7m jackfruits likely in four northern dists

JOYPURHAT, Apr 10: Jackfruit growers of four northern districts - Bogura, Sirajganj, Joypurhat and Natore - are elated this season.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), the juicy popular fruit is being grown over 15,670 hectares of land in the districts.

DAE officials said around 0.7 million jackfruits can be grown this season from around 0.2 million trees.

Last year over 0.6 million fruits were produced from 14,560 hectares of land which market price was over Tk 500 million, said horticulture specialist of DAE Tahirul Islam.

Commercial cultivation of the national fruit is popular in the northern districts, said farmer Mizanur Rahman of Panchbibi upazila of Joypurhat. He further said its cultivation is expanding for high profit.

"I have 30 trees in my orchard. I expect to get some 900 jackfruits this season from which profit of Tk 45,000 can be made", said farmer Shahadat Hossain of Kazipur upazila of Sirajganj.

DAE officials urged the jackfruit growers to be careful in this stage to avoid attack of any diseases. They also suggest the farmers to consult with the field-level agri-officials if they face any problem.

Deputy Director of DAE, Bogura region, Protul Chandra Sarker said, "To make the jackfruit cultivation a success, we are monitoring orchards round the clock.

He also expressed his satisfaction over the excellent budding.
