12 die in road crashes in five districts

A total of 12 people were killed in road mishaps in five districts on Tuesday, report agencies.

In Manikganj, three persons were killed and 20 others injured in a road mishap at Cross-Bridge area of Ghior upazila.

The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

Rifat Rahman Shamim, superintendent of Manikganj police, said the accident took place around 3:30 pm as the bus tried to overtake a motorcycle and hit a roadside tree after losing control, leaving three dead on the spot and 20 others injured. Of them six were injured critically.

On information, police rushed in and sent the corpses to the Manikganj General Hospital for autopsy.

In Mymensingh, three people were killed and three others injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on the Mymensingh-Tangail road at Gabtoli in Muktagachha upazila.

The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.

Ali Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Muktagachha Police Station, said the collision took place around 12 pm, leaving two passengers of the auto-rickshaw dead on the spot and four others injured.

Later, one died on way to Mymensing Medical College Hospital while the others were admitted there, he added.

Police seized the truck but its driver and helper managed to flee the scene, the OC said.

Meanwhile, in Habiganj, three more people were killed and four others injured following a head on collision between a bus and a truck on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in Haritola area.

The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.

The accident took place around 8 am when the stone-laden truck collided with a Sylhet-bound bus of 'Shyamoli Paribahan', leaving three bus passengers dead on the spot and four others injured, said Mohammad Jashim Uddin, officer-in-charge of Sayestaganj Highway Police.

In Chuadanga, two people including a woman were killed and a minor boy was injured in two separate road accidents in Damurhuda and Sadar upazilas of the district.

The deceased were identified as Ahosan Habib Tapon, 25, a resident of Joyrampur village under Damurhuda upazila and Sufia Begum, 50, an inhabitant of Kathuli village under Sadar upazila.

Local people said Tapon died when a truck hit his motorcycle at Kuthipara as he was returning home along with his son this noon. They were brought to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital where the duty doctors declared Tapon dead.

Besides, Sufia Begum died as a Votvoti hit her in Kathuli area under Sadar upazila. Sufia succumbed to her injuries on way to the hospital.

In Natore, a covered van driver was killed as his vehicle hit a roadside tree in Mahishvanga area on the Bonpara-Hatikumrul Highway under Baraigram upazila.

The deceased was identified as M Manik, 28, son of Hasan Ali of Madhapara village under Sarishabari upazila in Jamalpur district.

Police said the accident took place in the area at about 9.00 am when the coverd van hit the tree as its driver lost control over the steering, leaving driver critically injured.

Injured driver Manik was sent to the Natore Sadar Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at noon.
