About 200 families depend on fishing in Sirajganj

SIRAJGANJ, July 14: More than 200 families depend on caching fishes with Khora net during rainy season in Sirajganj district from last four decades.

Some two rivers including Bangalee and Jamuna flow through the district. It is course for the farmers but blessing for the fishermen.

The inhabitants of the area remain very worried during the rainy season as vast areas of the district devour the dyke of the rivers and engulf the crop land.

They cultivate the land or pull the rickshaw other time of the year but they remain busy during rainy season.

They catch indigenous fish item with the net at the corner of the river, main point of water steam and small water body from the evening to late at night with assistance of their family members.

Everyday, they get three to five Kgs of fish Tk worth 500 to 900 with the net. They are to invest Tk 3,000 to 5,000 to purchase the net for a year.

"I am to manage the expenditure of three members of my family as I have no own land," said fisher man Golzar Hossain, 56, under Kaziur upazila of the district. He again said, "I suffer much when I don't get sufficient fishes from the river."

Each Kg of indigenous fish is being sold at Tk 200 to 300 in the local fish market. They are not getting adequate fish this season, creates much panic for the fishermen at all in the area.

President of Fisheries Samity Arun Kumar said, the fishermen pass the hardship time round the year as they don't get sufficient fishes in the rivers.
