Abundant red spinach production makes grassroots farmers happy

JOYPURHAT, Mar 19: Abundant production of red spinach makes hundreds of grassroots farmers happy this season.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources, over 3,000 hectares of land were brought under the farming of red spinach in the district.

DAE officials said growers have already made a profit of over Tk 12 million this year.

More than 2,000 cultivators of Akkelpur, Kalai, Khetlal, Panchbibi and Sadar upazilas of the district are engaged with the leafy vegetable production, said sub-assistance agriculture officer of DAE Azizur Rahman.

The Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) supplied quality seeds and the DAE provided fertilisers to the farmers.

Farmer Osman Goni of Akkelpur upazila said he cultivated red spinach one 12 decimals of land this season and made over Tk 23,000 net profit.

Deputy Director of DAE Sudhindranath Roy said grassroots farmers should bring more land under the production of red spinach for more profit.
