Arum growers making handsome profit

JOYPURHAT, Apr 15: Arum cultivators of the district are making a handsome profit this season.

Getting repeated good market price and bumper production, a good number of poor and marginal peasants of the area are showing interest to expand arum farming. Besides, its cultivation is more easy and cheap compare to other crops.

Meanwhile, they have started founding the appearance of success cultivating the crops in a large scale with assistance of authority concern.

The farmers of the district get lucrative profits from the agriculture sectors round the year as their soil is suitable for growing Rabi and Kharif crops.

They have sowed the quality seed, provided from own enterprise, last February and they will start harvesting the vegetable next month, said farmer Aminur Rahman, 34, under Kalai upazila.

To cultivate a bigha of land farmers need to expand Tk 9,000 to 10,000 and sell them with Tk 20,000 to Tk 30,000. They can make over Tk 20,000 from a bigha of land if the market price remains fair during harvesting period.

"I have cultivated arum on some 35 decimals of land spending Tk 3400 this season and expecting to make over Tk 30000 as profit," said farmer Lokman Hossain, 56, at Alompur village under Khetlal upazila of the district.

In a recent visit the correspondent found the farmers are passing busy time to rear the crop land defying adverse weather condition from the very early to late at night. The peasants also use organic fertilisers along with chemical ones.

Sub-assistance agriculture officer Azizur Rahman said, "We have provided all sort of agri-based support including fertilser to make the programme a grand success."
