BARI develops 207 high-yielding crops

JAMALPUR, May 21 (BSS): A total of 207 high yielding crops have been developed by the Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI), which are contributing to increase food production in the country, an official of BARI told a workshop in the district on Monday.

"The varieties included horticultural crops, cereals, pulses, oilseeds, tuber crops and other technologies such as postharvest processing, seed technology and biotechnology," Director (Research), of BARI Dr Md Abdul Wahab said.

He said Bangladesh has already witnessed adverse impact of climate change as carbon emissions is increasing alarmingly due to massive expansion of industrialisation in some countries.

As part of adaptation measures, BARI has developed different stress tolerant varieties of rice and other crops aiming to cope with changed environment, Dr Wahab said.

"Alongside different stress tolerant varieties, we have intensified research works for developing high yielding crops to increase food production," he added.

Agriculture scientists, researchers and officials from different government and non-government organisations, among others, were present at the workshop.
