MAGURA, Mar 27: Officials at the Magura regional Spice Research Centre said BARI Roshun-2 cultivation will be profitable for the growers.

They cultivated the garlic variety on the centre compound for the first time this season and started harvesting the spice crop.

The officials said production of BARI Roshun-2 is around eight to nine tonnes per hectare as against three to four tones of common varieties.

Moreover, the variety is less vulnerable to virus-related diseases and harmful pests.

Garlic contains an element named 'Allicin' which is good for human health. BARI Roshun-2 contains 200 times higher 'Allicin' that that of the common varieties, the official added.

Dr Moniruzzaman of the research centre said at present the country produces 0.42 million of garlic every year.

"If we can expand the cultivation of BARI Roshun-2 total output of the item can be increased to 0.95 tonnes."
