MAGURA, July 13: Heat-tolerant Aus variety BINA Dhan-19 paddy has raised hope among the farmers in the district.
At a programme in observance of the field-day of the BINA Dhan-19, a good number of growers said some 20 acres of land have been brought under farming of the paddy variety in the district.
"Harvest has already started and we are expecting around 30.50 tonnes of paddy," said a farmer.
The short-duration paddy variety can survive drought-like situation and per hectare production may be around 4.5 tonnes.
Growers can harvest it within 95 to 100 days after the cultivation while other common varieties take 120 days. Moreover, price of the paddy can be a little bit higher.
The field-day programme was arranged in Moghi village under Magura Sadar upazila recently.
Magura DAE training officer Shohrab Hossen attended the event as the chief guest with BINA officer-in-charge Sushan Chowhan presiding.
Mizanur Rahman of Moghi village under Magura Sadar said he brought one bigha of land under BINA Dhan 19 cultivation this season.
"I have already completed by paddy harvest and got a good yield," he said.
"Some other farmers in my village, who are growing common variety of Aus, are yet to harvest their produce though we started cultivation at the same time. They need another month to harvest their paddy", the grower said further.
Training officer Shohrab Hossen said, "We have achieved outstanding success in producing BINA Dhan 19. If the cultivation gains popularity, we will be able to reduce pressure on underground water."
