JAMALPUR Oct 21 (BSS): The students of char areas of the district, who have to cross mighty Jamuna river for attending their schools, are now very happy after getting two boats from the government to pass through the river.

The Local Government Division (LGD) under its LGSP-3 project financed for making the boats for the char students of Patharshi union and Kulkandi union in Islampur upazila.

According to LGD officials, Tk 0.8 million was allocated for making two boats for the remote char students of the two unions.

In absence of high school in the char areas, locals said, students must go to the schools located in union council areas for their study. But, in the past, the students of char areas had to suffer a lot while crossing the Jamuna for lack of boats.

Realising the problem, local union councils made two boats spending Tk 0.8 million with financial support from LGSP-3.

Chairman of Patharshi union council Iftekhar Alam said the Jamuna has separated some villages of the unions.

Observing that post-primary students faced problems to cross the river, he said after introduction of the boats, students can now cross the river easily and they need not to pay money.
