Sacks of potatoes stockpiled for sale at Mokamtola Haat under Shibganj upazila in Bogra on Monday. — FE Photo BOGRA, Dec 18: The potato hoarders of the district have been counting losses as the newly-harvested one has already appeared in the market. Market demand of new potato is higher than the old one.
Market sources said people prefer the newly-harvested potato instead of the old one. As a result a massive amount of potato of the previous season remains unsold.
Sub-assistance agriculture officer of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Rezaul Karim said demand of old potato is decreasing due to a bumper production and also the low market price of the newly-harvested on this season.
Farmer Abdul Hamid of Shibganj upazila said farmers pay Tk 320 for preserving each sack (two maunds) of potato. But the same amount is being sold at Tk 200 across the district.
Trader Zillur Rahman at Mokamtola Bazar said the price of the old potato is lower for the newly-harvested one.
"I have persevered some 60 sacks of potato at Tk 60,000 but sold those at Tk 25,000," said farmer Mursedul Islam of Boalia village under Adamdighi upazila.
Manager of a cold storage Kawsar Ahmed said, "We are in a difficult situation as the clients do not come to take their potato due to acute low market price. A good number of traders have been selling the item at a nominal rate moving village to village."
