SYLHET, Mar 20: Boro farming target in Sylhet region has been surpassed, an official at the DAE's Sylhet divisional office said on Wednesday.

The farming season has ended and the final reports from the districts show the crop had been cultivated on a total of 478,869 hectares against the previously-set target at 468,557 hectares, informed DAE Additional Director Md Altabur Rahman.

The covered area includes 79,767 hectares in Sylhet, 53,162 hectares in Moulvibazar, 121,500 hectares in Habiganj and 224,440 hectares in Sunamganj.

The total, however, includes 275,705 hectares in the haor areas and the rest 203,164 hectares on the non-haor areas in the four districts of the division, the report mentioned.

Since the crop's farming is increased this season in all the four districts, the official said seedbeds were set on a total of 26,100 hectares although the target was 21,945 hectares.

The cultivated area includes 87,036 hectares of hybrid, 379,146 hectares of high yielding varieties and 12,732 hectares of local varieties, the official added.

The DAE had earlier set the farming target on 468,557 hectares in the region, including 79,709 hectares in Sylhet, 53,116 hectares in Moulvibazar, 118,197 hectares in Habiganj and highest 217,535 hectares in the district of Sunamganj.

Some farmers in many areas of Sunamganj, Moulvibazar and Habiganj delayed farming due to late recession of waters from croplands on lower region.

The government through DAE distributed assistance for a total of 9200 selected poor farmers this season in the division spending Tk 9,223,000. The inputs include seed, fertiliser and other expenses.

However, farmers on some areas are in much trouble as they had failed cultivating the crop this season due to accumulation of silt on many haors in the Sunamganj and Habiganj districts and shortage of water for lands.
