Boro harvest going on in full swing in Tangail

TANGAIL, Apr 25: Boro harvest is going on in full swing in all the twelve upazilas of the district.

Farmers are expecting a bumper production of the crop.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Tangail, said 1,70,623 hectares were brought under the farming of Boro with the production target of 6,53,365 tonnes.

Sources said farmers are trying their best to complete paddy harvest as early as possible so that any natural calamities can harm the ripen crop.

Shariful Islam, sub-assistant agri official of DAE, Tangail said, "Though we are expecting a bumper Boro production this season, a good number of fields was affected by blast disease.

Meanwhile, our Nilphamari correspondent adds: Thousands of day labourers are migrating from the district to other districts during the current Boro harvesting period.

Labourers from all the six upazilas of the district are migrating to Bogura, Joypurhat, Noagoan, Natore, Rajshahi and other areas to work as farm labourers.

Most of them are travelling by intercity trains. All the intercity trains plying from Chilahati to such destination are packed with passengers everyday and some of them are resorting to travel on the rooftop of the railway compartments by taking life risk.

Trains that ply from Chilahati, the last railway station of this rail route in the north include Titumir, Borendra, Simanto and such other intercity trains.

Labourers are being going to such destinations as Boro harvesting has not yet started in the district which will begin within a month or so.

Farmlabour Abdur Rahman of Gomnati union under Domar upazila said every year during paddy harvesting period he visits Bogura to earn some money. He said this season he would stay there for a month. He expressed the hope that he would be able to earn Tk 30,000.

It seems that each of the outgoing labourers are very cheerful as they would be able to earn a lump sum amount of money and which would enable the wheel of their livelihood move fast.

Sources said more than 10,000 labourers across the district are migrating to the south for harvesting Boro this season.
