Brick kiln set up near agriculture land burns full grown paddy

RANGPUR, Apr 28: A good number of farmers are facing huge loss as toxic gas emitted from a brick kiln set up near agriculture land has burnt full-grown Boro paddy on more than 50 acres of land in Champatali village of Damodpur union under Badarganj upazila.

While visiting the affected area on Saturday it was found that a vast tract of Boro fields awaiting harvest was damaged by the toxic hot gas emitted from a brick kiln named Four Star Bricks.

A number of farmers under the area alleged have been facing difficulties in farming crops and planting fruit bearing trees since the brickfield began manufacturing bricks in the area three years ago.

Farmers have incurred losses as around more than 80 per cent of the ripened paddy have been damaged by the poisonous gas emitted from the brick kiln.

Abdur Rahman, an affected farmer of champatali village, said he cultivated Boro on two bighas of land this season and became delighted to witness the excellent growth of paddy plant. He was supposed to harvest his produce three days ago but all his hopes got shattered when he found almost all of the paddies burnt by toxic hot gas emitted from the brick field.

Some farmers alleged that for the last few years they are facing huge loss those who have crop lands near brick fields but the authority concerned seems to be oblivious to the matter, they further alleged.

Owner of Four Star Bricks brick field Bisnu Roy said they have got government permission for running the brick kiln. Thick and hot smoke caused by suspension of burning bricks might have caused harm to some Boro fields, he said. "We are making list of the affected farmers to give them compensation", he added.

Sources alleged around 50 brick kilns are manufacturing bricks in the upazila and all the brick kilns have been set up near or on agricultural lands, posing serious threat to arable lands.
