Bumper cucumber yield delights Joypurhat growers

JOYPURHAT, June 18: A bumper production of cucumber has delighted hundreds of peasants in the district this season.

Sources said a good number of farmers of Akkelur, Kalai, Panchbibi, Khetlal and Sadar upazilas of the district cultivated the vegetable on a vast tract of land this season.

To get quality cucumber, the field should be prepared well.

Then the farmers dig small holes to sow the seeds.

The holes should be feet distance and six inches deep.

Urea, TSP, Mp and organic one should be used in the irrigation water.

But hybrid cucumber is gaining popularity among the growers of the district.

It can be grown every season.

But, rainy season is the proper time for cucumber cultivation, sources added.

Cucumber is being sold at Tk 20 to Tk 25 in the retail market while Tk 15 to Tk 20 in the wholesale market.

The price may rise within a week, market sources added.

Locally-produced cucumber is being transported to Dhaka, Chattogram, Narayanganj, Sylhet and other district across the country.

Deputy Director of DAE Sudhindranath Roy said the area is well-known for growing quality cucumber.

Cucumber growers are making a handsome profit from the produce every season.
