Bumper yield, fair prices delight jackfruit farmers

MAGURA, July 02: A bumper jackfruits production has been achieved in the district this season.

Growers of the fruit are also delighted as they are getting a fair market price.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Magura, sources said the popular fruit was grown on 1,650 hectares of land in the district.

Total production stood at 21 tonnes.

A small jackfruit is selling at Tk 60 to Tk 70 in the local market, middle one at Tk 90 to Tk 100 and a large jackfruit is being sold at Tk 100 to Tk 120.

Both growers and consumers are satisfied over the present market rate, sources said.

Farmer Belayet Hossein of Abalpur village under Magura Sadar said a mature jackfruit tree bears around 60 to 80 fruits every season.

"I got some 7,000 jackfruits from my 100 trees on my two-bigha orchard", the farmer said, adding, "I have already made a profit of Tk 0.3 million and am expecting Tk 0.2 million more this season."

Magura DAE official Abdur Rashid said jackfruit grows well in the area. It is turning fortune wheel of many people in the district.
