JOYPURHAT, Aug 31: A good number of growers in the district have attained financial solvency by cultivating cherry tomato on their lands.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources, the tomato variety is being grown on 15 bighas of land with the production target of 10 tonnes.

The farmers have cultivated the vegetable on 15 bighas of land this season expecting over 10 tonnes of yield.

"We started farming the item from last year on an experimental basis and got lucrative market price", some farmers said.

Many farmers have already started harvesting their produce. Cherry tomato is of short-duration. Growers can start harvesting the item after 75 days of its cultivation.

It is selling at Tk 100 to Tk 120 per kg in the retail markes and Tk 90 to Tk 100 in the wholesale markets across the area.

On an average, the farmers are to spend around Tk 20,000 to Tk 25,000 to grow the fruit on a bighas of land and a profit of over Tk 50,000 can be made from the produce, said farmer Shadat Hossain of Kalai upazila.

Cultivators should expand the production of cherry tomato for more profit, said sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE Azizur Rahman.

Many new farmers have shown their interest in growing the item on a vast tract of land, he added.

The Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) provided quality seeds to the farmers.

Some farmers said cherry tomato grown well on a high land. It requires both organic and chemical fertilisers.

Deputy Director of DAE Sudhindranath Roy said the soil of the region is quite favourable for cherry tomato cultivation. The cultivation of the fruit is gaining momentum in the district due to high profit.
