Chhatak-Doarabazar link road collapses due to severe erosion

SYLHET, Apr 01: The connecting road between bordering Chhatak and Doarabazar upazilas of Sunamganj district went snap on Saturday again due to severe erosion at places on the Surma riverbank during the last few days. Meanwhile, some official team from the Water Development Board (WDB) head office from the capital visited the affected areas on Thursday afternoon, sources informed. Besides, Deputy Commissioner of Sunamganj Md. Sabirul Islam also visited the areas yesterday afternoon.

The erosion on the riverbank took serious turn during the last one week, locals informed. A major part of the upazilas' link road at Monglargaon went eroded during Friday afternoon's rains and storm. Meanwhile over 50 poor families of the villages Monglargaon, Majergaon, Muradpur, Purbo Masimpur etc became homeless due to the severe erosion. Some of them erected temporary shelter on the roadside places.

President of the committee to protect the riverbank from erosion Tajul Islam said that they had staged human chain and rallies to press the demand several occasions in the recent months, but to no effect as yet.

Doarabazar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Kazi Mohua Momtaj said the WDB officials had already visited the sites and requested higher authorities for emergency repairs. But, due to fund constraints the Upazila Parishad can't do any immediate works.
