Commercial cultivation of cassia leaf brings solvency to Rangpur growers

RANGPUR, Dec 26: A good number of farmers at different areas under Kawnia upazila in the district are getting financially benefited by cultivating cassia leaf (Tejpata) commercially in recent years.

Growers said cultivation of cassia leaf is more lucrative than the cultivation of Paddy, wheat and some other crops. If they get quality saplings and latest technology its cultivation would certainly be increased in the upazila and its adjacent areas, they further said.

Traders from different areas across the country are coming here to buy this popular item from them. Witnessing their success many farmers of their villages and adjacent villages have shown their interest in its cultivation, sources said.

Sohrab Hossain, a grower of Uttor Rajib village, told The FE that he has been earning handsome profit through its cultivation on his land for three years. He has more than 100 cassia leaf trees in his orchard. Last year he earned more than Tk 1,00000 from the sale. This year he has already earned Tk 50,000 by selling his produce. He is optimistic of earning at least Tk 1,20,000 from the sale this year.

Ariful, another grower of Choutar mor village in the upazila said he has changed his financial condition cultivating tejpata. He told the FE that once he used to grow other crops in his land but now he is fully engaged in tejpata cultivation. For the last two years he has been making handsome profits from it. "At present I earn Tk 1,00000 to Tk 1,10,000 a year from its farming", he added.

According to upazila agriculture office sources commercial cultivation of cassia leaf is on the rise as its cultivation proved lucrative. Around 130 hectares of land have brought under its cultivation this year.

Upazila Agriculture office sources said encouraged by easy cultivation process and huge profit, many farmers of the upazila are showing their interest in its cultivation. For this reason its commercial cultivation is on the increase in recent years, sources added.
