NAOGAON, Jan 10: The community seedbed method, a modern process of planting paddy seed, is gaining popularity in Mohadevpur upazila of the district.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said the official target for Boro paddy cultivation has been fixed at 27,400 hectares of land in the upazila.

To meet the target, farmers have prepared Boro seedbeds on 1,500 hectares of land. A good number of peasants in the upazila have applied the community seedbed method this season.

A source said the community seedbed method is much easier and less costly than the local method.

The beds are prepared on dry land after ploughing several times. Then three feet wide seedbeds are made after applying organic and chemical fertiliser on the land, the source added.

"With the support of agriculture department officials," Badiul Alam, another farmer of the same upazila said, "I am thinking of trying plantation of Boro paddy on community seedbeds on large scale of land from next year."

Upazila Agriculture Officer Jahangir Alam Pramanik said the community seedbed method is gaining popularity among the farmers with necessary support and suggestions from the field level DAE officials.

After successful plantation of the crop this year, more farmers will adopt the easy method in the upcoming years, Mr. Pramanik said expressing optimism.
