Cotton farming on the rise in Rangpur region

RANGPUR, Apr 01: The farmers of different areas under Rangpur district are showing their interest in cotton farming in recent years as they are getting handsome profit.

According to sources the prospect of cotton farming is bright in the region as the soil and climate of the region are suitable for its cultivation.

A good number of farmers are cultivating the crop instead of tobacco and achieving success which is encouraging them to cultivate the crop on a large scale in next season, sources further said.

Cotton Development Board, Rangpur sources said the cultivation area of the crop is on the rise in the region in recent times.

This season cotton was cultivated on around 880 hectares in Rangpur district and its last stage harvesting is going on across the district, sources added.

This season the crop was cultivated abundantly in many areas including Char Dhumgara, Char Chatura of Kawnia, Char Vangagara, Char Morneya of Gangachara upazila.

Farmer Khorshed Ali, of Char Dhumgara village in Kawnia upazila told The Financial Express that a number of farmers of his area have been earning satisfactory profit cultivating it on their lands instead of tobacco.

Around 50 maunds of cotton can be harvested from one acre of land and per maund cotton is sold at around Tk 2400 to Tk 2500, he added.

Farmers said if they get proper training and other necessary assistances, its farming will certainly be increased.

According to Rangpur Cotton Development Board sources, farmers are much interested in farming of the crop as it can be grown even on abandoned land as well.

The growers are also earning good yield as well as satisfactory profit from the crop this year, sources informed.

Many farmers are engaged in cotton cultivation on the sandy lands and earning good profit.

Its farming on sandy lands can play a vital role in mitigating poverty of the people living in char areas in the region, sources added.
