Cucumber yield in Joypurhat abundant

JOYPURHAT, Mar 09: High production of cucumber has brought smile on the faces of grassroots farmers in the district.

Cucumber farmers in different village are making good profit from the produce for bumper yield and fair market prices.

Many farmers in Akkelpur, Kalai, Khetlal, Panchbibi and Sadar upazilas said cucumber grows well in the district. Farming of the popular item is expanding due to repeated abundant yield and good prices.

Farmers usually grow the item after harvesting of T-Aman paddy. High land is suitable for good production of cucumber.

Sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE Atikur Rahman said cucumber farming is popular among the farmers in the area. It is a high yielding and short duration item.

In a recent visit in a kitchen market of Akkelpur upazila this correspondent found each maund of cucumber was sold at Tk 1,400 to Tk 1,450 in the retail market while Tk 1200 to Tk 1300 in the wholesale market.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DEA) office sources, over 515 hectares of land have been brought under the production of cucumber in the district against some 375 hectares of land target.

"I have cultivated cucumber on 25 decimals of land this season. The farming does not require mach cost", said Jamir Uddin of Akkelpur upazila.

The grower further said, "I have already made around Tk 30,000 profit this season."

He expects to earn Tk 20,000 more from rest of the produce.

Deputy Director of DAE Sudhindranath Roy said, "We encourage the grassroots peasants to expand cucumber farming."
