MAGURA, Dec 01: Cultivation of HYV wheat-30 is expanding fast in the district.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Magura sources said they have taken a scheme to bring some 4,048 hectares of land under the farming of wheat this season of which about 3,500 hectares of land will be come under HYV 30- wheat.

In 2015, wheat growers in the district had faced severe loss due to acute blast pest attack.

But, HYV wheat-30 is less vulnerable to this disease so it requires less insecticide. It is also less vulnerable to cold injury.

On the other hand, HYV wheat-30 is high productive than the other local wheat varieties.

Some 3.2 tonnes of yield can be produced in a hectare of land.

Habibul Islam of Belnagar village under Magura Sadar said he started growing HYV 30 wheat from the last season.

The farmer said, "My field was completely free from blast attack last season. I am also expecting a bumper yield this year."

Jamal Hossein of Amtoil village under Sreepur upazila said, "Earlier DAE officials discouraged us to cultivate wheat in fear of blast attack.

But this year they are encouraging us to cultivate HYV-30 as this variety was completely free from blast attack."

Magura DAE training officer Shohrab Hossein said cultivation of HYV wheat-30 is profitable.

It is cost saving and ensures high yield.

The official said, “Cultivators should grow the variety of wheat on commercial basis.”

Mr Hossein urged the authority concerned to take effective steps to increase the cultivation of HYV wheat-30 across the country to boost output of the cereal crop.
