Cultivators eye bumper jackfruit production

NILPHAMARI, May 12: After massive blooming, the tender jackfruit are growing superbly in the district. Farmers are predicting a bumper production of the fruit.

Jackfruit trees are mainly planted in the homesteads of the growers in the district.

Besides, there are around 70 jackfruit orchards in all the six upzilas of the district.

These orchards are small in size comprising 30 to 60 decimal of land.

A jackfruit tree generally contains 40 to 50 fruits.

Sources said DAE officials advised the farmers to take proper care of the growing tender fruit and maintain the nearby area of the orchards and homesteads clean to prevent attack by harmful insects for getting good fruit output.

Farmer Abu Alam of Itakhola union under Sadar upzila said he has 10 jackfruit trees at his homesteads and he sells most of the fruits for money.

He said one jackfruit is sold in the market at a price of tk 20 to 40 according to its size. He said he is expecting to get 400 jackfruits and after self consumption he would be able to sale those at a total price of Tk 6,000 or so.

Sources said Nilphamari is self-sufficient in jackfruit production and even locally-produced jackfruits are being transported to other districts for sale.
