Cumilla road becomes dilapidated

CUMILLA, Aug 21: The road from the Tomcham Bridge to Nandanpur Kotbari area in the district town has become dilapidated.

Commuters have been suffering much due to the poor condition of the 8.0 km road.

A half kilometre portion near the Tomcham Bridge Market is the worst. The portion is covered with large potholes full of foul smelling water and mud.

Locals said the road from Chapapur to Nandanpur Kotbari is an essential means of communication of the city dwellers.

Even though road maintenance authorities recently finished repairing the section from Chapapur to Tomcham Bridge, but the rest remains unrepaired.

Commuters to and from Cumilla University, Bangladesh Academy For Rural Development (BARD), Cumilla Polytechnic Institute, Cumilla Cantonment, and various other institutions use the road on a regular basis.

The very poor condition of the road also has a negative impact on the division's tourism revenue. Tourists on their way to Mainamati Museum, Shalban Vihara and other places have a hard time reaching their destinations.

Monir Hossain, a CNG-driven auto-rickshaw driver, said, "It is hard to ply all kinds of vehicles on the road. Many passengers fall sick."

Motorcycle driver Abul Bashar said, "It is difficult to drive a motorcycle along this road."

Local Md Masud Alam said most of the time the authority repair it on temporary basis. "We want a permanent solution", he further said.

Md Ahad Ullah, Executive Engineer of Cumilla Roads and Highways Department, said, "A portion of the dilapidated road has already been repaired. The rest of the road will be repaired soon."
