Current net use continues in Bogura district

BOGURA, Mar 30: Indiscriminate use of current nets is threatening fish items from the free water bodies in the district.

Some greedy fishermen are doing the evil deed round the year defying law and order. The local administration ensures the drive but they escape sensing their presence.

Some four big rivers namely Jamuna, Karatoa, Bangalee and Nagor and several beels flow through the district.

Iramoty, Isamoti, Raktadah, Subeel, Moragangi and Baishaki are the main beels in the district.

More than 300 families in the area live their lives by catching fish.

Despite regular drives by the authorities concerned to prevent the use of current nets, a section of fishermen continued catching fish with the nets, said Golam Mustafa, upazila fisheries officer.

"I have to run family expenditure by fishing in the free water body," said a fisherman in Dhunot upazila. "I know about the negative impact of current nets but I have no alternative as I can hardly catch fish with other type nets," he said.

During a recent visit this correspondent found some fishermen were catching fish with current nets in the Jamuna under Shariakandi upazila of the district.

Some associate of the fishermen are carrying them with three-wheelers to Bogura Fotteh Ali Bazar.

Another fisherman Sariful Hassan of the upazila said mobile courts often destroy current nets by conducting drives.

District fisheries officer (DFO) Rawson Ara, said they are taking legal steps against the fishermen who use current nets.
