JOYPURHAT, Mar 03: After providing all sorts of necessary agri-input, Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Joypurhat office is expecting to achieve around 500 tonnes of wheat output this season.

Farmers started sowing seeds at the end of last November to the mid of December.

Growers expect to harvest the crop in the middle of the current month.

If the weather condition remains favourable, farmers generally can harvest the crop after 110 to 120 days of its plantation, sources said.

Both the indigenous and hybrid varieties are popular among the growers.

More than 700 farmers of the district are engaged with the production of wheat this season, said sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE Azizur Rahman.

Cultivators are optimistic as the plants are growing well, the official further said.

Each maund of wheat is sold at Tk 1,000 to Tk 1,100 in the retail market, while Tk 900 to Tk 950 in the wholesale market.

According to the officials at DAE, around 1,200 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of wheat cultivation this year while it was 1,000 hectares previous year.

A good number of growers said farmers spend around Tk 12,000 to Tk 15,000 to grow the crop on a bigha of land.

Hamidur Rjman of Akkelpur upazila said, "I have cultivated wheat on 34 decimals of land this season spending Tk 11,780."
