DAE looks to produce over 0.5m bottle gourds in Bogura

BOGURA, July 14: Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) is expecting to produce over 0.5 million bottle gourds this season in the district.

Around 7800 hectares of land have been brought under the cultivation in Dupchanchia, Kahaloo, Shibganj, Sherpur, Sonatola, Sariakandi, Gabtoly, Nandigram, Adamdighi and sadar upazilas of the district this season.

But, they had cultivated the vegetable on some 5,600 hectares of land last year and produced around 0.3 million of the crops with assistance of the authority concern across the area.

In a recent visit at different villages under Shibganj upazila correspondent found the farmers are passing busy time to rear the vegetable defying acute heat of the sun. Some of the farmers are separating weed from the growing sapling in a view to make the cultivation a success.

The weather of the season is favourable for growing the vegetable well, said farmer Azim uddin, 45, under Shibganj upazila of the district. He has brought some 23 decimal of land under the crop cultivation this season.

During the time of sowing the seed the peasants are to use both chemical fertiliser like Urea, TSP, Mp and organic one in their cropland, said Sub-assistance Agriculture Officer Faridur Rahman.

Early cultivated bottle gourd has already been started harvesting from the last month in a small scale but the farmer will harvest the crop in a full swing from next month.

Deputy Director of DAE Protul Chandra Sarker said excellent growing system predicted bumper production of bottle gourd this season in the region. The farmers of the district have shown more interest to cultivate the crops abundantly, he added.
