Deluge hampers academic activities of 50,000 students in Bogura, Sirajganj

500 schools remain closed

BOGURA, July 30: Academic activities of some 50 thousand students in Bogura and Sirajganj districts have come to a halt as around 500 schools have remained closed due to flood.

Meanwhile, some schools have been shifted to other places to continue their regular activities and some schools have been closed for three weeks.

Rafiqul Alam, primary education officer of Sariakandi upazila in Bogura, said. "If the flood prolongs, we will face a serious problem."

"Erosion has already engulfed many school buildings in the meantime", he added.

Shihab, a student of Bilin Char Fazilpur Government Primary School, said the school has been closed over the last two weeks. He said both the school and his house have been inundated by the floodwater.

Assistant teacher of Shimulatai Government Primary School Niludha Aktar said, "Students are not able to attend the school."

Sonatola Upazila Executive Officer Shafiqur Alam said the flood damaged several educational institutions, including six government primary schools.

In the last few days in Sirajganj district some school buildings have collapsed in three upazilas of the district.

Due to the flood, 212 educational institutions are closed, he added.

Sirajganj District Secondary and Primary Education Office sources said due to the flood, 212 schools in five upazilas of Sirajganj are still closed.
