Eco-friendly pest management methods help boost okra yield

RANGPUR, Apr 10: Okra cultivators in the district are satisfied over a good production this season.

Farmers have recently started harvesting the produce across the region and earning satisfactory profit from the sale, sources said.

Sources also informed presently farmers of the region are showing more interest in growing different varieties of vegetables including okra instead of paddy as they are not getting good price of paddy.

While visiting some villages of the district it was found the farmers busy in taking care of their vegetable fields. They are growing different varieties of vegetables including okra plentifully in the region.

Traders from across the country are purchasing the vegetables and transporting those to their respective areas.

Thousands of farmers in the district are changing their financial conditions by cultivating different varieties of vegetables including okra in recent years, sources added.

Azizur Rahman, a farmer of Jumakhanpara village at Ranipukur union under Mithapukur upazila told this correspondent that he has been farming okra for the last few years and achieving good profit. He has already earned Tk 8,000 by selling his produce this season and expecting more profit during rest of the season.

Sariful Mia, another farmer of Nabdiganj village under Pirgachha upazila said he has cultivated different varieties of vegetables in his land this year including okra. Vegetable farming is more lucrative than that of paddy and some other crops, he added.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said farmers of many areas under the region are also attaining success in growing chemical-free or poison-free vegetables by using eco-friendly pest management methods like pheromone trap.

A good number of peasants are growing vegetables using such natural method instead of using pesticides. Such vegetables are healthy and nutritious, sources also said.

The department is also motivating and helping the growers cultivate such poison free vegetables, sources added.
