Excellent pointed gourd output brings smiles to faces of farmers

NAOGAON, July 20: The fair prices of pointed gourd, a popular vegetable item, have brought smile on the faces of the growers in Badalgachi upazila of the district.

Sources at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said more than 420 hectares of land have been brought under pointed gourd cultivation in all nine unions of the upazila this year.

Farmers have already started harvesing the vegetable from their land and are happy over the good production and price as they are making handsome profit selling the produce, the sources added.

Wholesalers in the upazila are sending pointed gourd to different parts of the country including Dhaka, Rajshahi, Chittagong, Khulna and Barishal.

Per maund of the vegetable is being sold at Tk 1,200 to 1,300 at local markets.

One Matiur Rahman of Nandahar village under the upazila said he cultivated pointed gourd on around 22 decimals of land and received an excellent output and good price of the vegetable this season.

Grower Shahinur Islam of Boikunthapur village informed he is happy over the price of pointed gourd as it has increased recently by Tk. 600 to 700 per maund.

Upazila agriculture officer Hasan Ali said peasants now -a -days are showing much interest in vegetable cultivation especially the pointed gourd for its easy management and better market price.
