Excessive use of chemical fertilisers erodes soil fertility in Barind area

RAJSHAHI, Apr 10: The risk of 'safe food' is increasing gradually since the use of pesticides and insecticides in crop and vegetables field is also increasing day to day. To ensure production of fresh, pest free crops and vegetable, the poisonous pesticides and insecticides are being used in the plants indiscriminately. For such indiscriminate use of poisons, human lives are at stake and they are being affected with various incurable diseases by eating those poison laced crops and vegetables.

The Barind region of the country-commonly known as storehouse of food of the country is now completely polluted with the use of toxic chemical fertiliser, pesticides and insecticides in the fields and crops. The present situation of fields at Barind region has turned to such a condition that without using pesticides, insecticides and chemical fertilisers no one can now even think of production of crops and vegetables there. The poisonous insecticides and pesticides at the first stage pollute the air during spraying those in the fields and create severe damage of environment. Secondly, the poison that deposited in the land after use is washed away by rain and pollutes water of ponds, canals, rivers and even the sea. Both human and animal lives are being threatened with toxic reaction by using the water of those ponds, canals and rivers. All fishes and aquatic animals and plants are also being threatened to be destroyed with the indiscriminate chemical pollution.

By consuming poison laced vegetables and crops, people are being attacked with various incurable and life-threatening diseases like gastric, ulcer, dysentery, jaundice, stroke, typhoid, high blood pressure, kidney failure and even cancer. There is not a single home in the country which is free from any sort of medicine. In every house of the country anyone can find some common medicine of gastric, headache, dysentery and diarrhoea. Taking the opportunity of spread of common diseases in every house, the drug industries were making a booming business in the country. Most of those diseases were spreading fast due to consuming of toxic foods by people from of walk of life.

The pesticides used in the field are soaked by the paddy and when a man consumes rice his health is also affected by the toxicity of rice. Again, the pesticide laced straw is consumed by milching cow and the milk produced from the cow is also laced with toxicity and by drinking the same milk, people are also affected with toxicity. The use of insecticides and pesticides also killed the good bacteria of the land and the fertility of the land is decreased. Moreover, toxic chemicals, pesticides and insecticides are not only being used in the crops and plants but highly toxic formalin and carbide are being used to preserve and ripening of fruits. Consuming of those fruits are also highly hazardous for our health. Even by consuming formalin laced fish people are facing health hazard regularly.

However, during recent times, the consciousness on the toxic effect of chemical fertiliser, insecticides and pesticides has been increased among all section of people. Many farmers are now using special insect and pest killers made of lime, baking soda and ashes. Using of those natural ingredients to contain insect and pests in the crops and vegetables are proving completely non-toxic and those fruits, vegetables and crops were not causing any toxicity in human body after their consumption. Using of those natural ingredients in the fields were not destroying the environment as well rather improving the soil, water and environmental condition.

Dr. Abdul Alim, deputy director of Horticulture Research Office in Rajshahi, said no formalin and carbide is used to process or ripening of any fruit in Rajshahi now. Fruits and fish of the district are now formalin free. He, however, said the use of chemical fertilisers, pesticides and insecticides in fields, plants and fruits orchards were continuing to destroy the environment, crops and fish stocks of the region.
