Farmers busy burning paddy residue to make farmland more fertile

GOPALGANJ, May 12: A good number of farmers of Tungipara uapzila in the district are now busy burning paddy residue to make their cropland more fertile.

According to Tungipara upazila agriculture office sources, there are 25,000 hectares of crop land in the upazila.

The method is popular among the growers as it is easy and effective. It is generally followed in the paddy field after harvesting the produce.

Jillal Sheikh of Pachkoania village said once cultivators used to follow the technique to get prepared their field for next cultivation.

It is a good method to save the cropland from harmful insects, he added.

Samir Kumar Goshwami, deputy director (Agriculture), Gopalganj district, said burning of paddy residues should be practiced across the country as it is effective and cost saving.

The technique is popular among the grassroots farmers.

Rang Mia Sheikh of Shingipara village said he applies the burning technique on his field every season.

"After doing so, the cropland requires less fertiliser. My father and grandfather also did the same thing at their time", he added.

Mohammad Jamal Uddin, upazila agriculture officer, Tungipara, said the method develops soil condition. It helps achieve good production.
