RANGPUR, July 30: The farmers in different areas in Rangpur agriculture region are disappointed as a vast tract of crop fields has been inundated by flood water during the last one month.

According to sources, crop fields in many areas have remained submerged in flood water caused by torrential rain and onrush of water from the upstream. As a result, different crop fields including Aman plants, seedbeds and vegetable fields are getting damaged. Consequently, growers are incurring huge financial loss.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Rangpur official sources said more than 32,000 hectares of crop fields have been submerged by flood water in five districts under the region, making the farmers worried about achieving their expected yield of the crop this season.

The districts are Rangpur, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari and Gaibandha. The crops include Aman and Aus paddy, jute, vegetables, sugarcane and some other crops.

A good number of farmers alleged that many cultivators of the region might not be able to transplant Aman seedlings again on their land due to paucity of saplings and dearth of time. Many of them will have to cultivate Rabi crops on their lands instead of Aman paddy, they added.

Asadul, a farmer of Mahipur village at Gangachara upazila in Rangpur district told the FE that he took loan from a local money lender for Aman farming this season. But the flood inundated his Aman field on two bighas.

A major portion of his paddy field got perished owing to flooding. Now He is apprehensive of repaying his loan.

DAE sources said flash flood triggered by incessant rain and onrush of water from the upstream during last one month has caused havoc to a vast area of crop fields in five districts under the Rangpur agriculture region. Necessary steps will be taken so that the affected cultivators of the region can transplant Aman saplings again to recoup their losses, sources added.
