Farming of Robi crops crosses target in Sylhet division

SYLHET, Jan 3: Farmers in greater Sylhet region have been passing busy time for cultivation of different Robi crops, including vegetable of all types and others. So far, crops on 85,040 hectares had been cultivated in the 4 districts, sources informed Tuesday adding, the target has already been exceeded this year as the weather is well enough yet.

The area includes, 52,435 hectares of vegetables of all types, 1,497 hectares of wheat, 7,443 hectares of mustard, 7,419 hectares of potato, 1,243 hectares of sweet potato, 2,798 hectares of coriander, 3,028 hectares of chilli, 534 hectares of onion, 320 hectares of garlic, 327 hectares of mosur and 645 hectares of water melon, 1,348 hectares of mashkalai, 242 hectares of groundnut, 468 hectares of maize and 4,752 hectares of French bean while the rest area are used for farming other crops like, mung bean, khesari, pea, til, ginger, turmeric etc.

It is mentionable here that a programme was taken up to bring about 75,000 hectares of land under the winter crops farming in Sylhet division this year, an official at the divisional office of DAE informed. Some 12,000 selected marginal farmers had been provided with seeds and fertilisers free of cost in incentive.

These include winter vegetables, mustard, wheat, potato, sweet potato, onion, ginger, chilli, cinnamon, gram, mung, arhar, black gram, motor, french bean, maize, ginger, turmeric, lentil, khesari, pea, lin seed, sugarcane etc, officials informed.

Some of the crops' farming is complete while the rests' area would be up a little.

Deputy Director of DAE, Sylhet Division Dr. Mamun Ur Rashid said, at the end of season the region's Robi farming area will be increased as a special programme to bringing fallow lands under farming of different crops entered 3rd year this time.
