Floods damage 7,500 dwellings in Sylhet

Minister visits affected areas, distributes relief materials

SYLHET, July17: At least 7,500 dwellings in the district were badly-affected by the floods caused by the rains and rolling water from the upper region in India, officials said at a press conference on Wednesday.

Of these, 6456 were affected partially and the rest 995 were damaged totally, officials said in the afternoon briefing at the Deputy Commissioner's office.

They, however, said water has started receding from the affected areas and there is almost no chance of further inundation soon.

Yet 300,000 people have remained marooned while academic activities in 79 primary schools and 81 secondary schools in the district have been suspended, the meeting was told.

Acting Deputy Commissioner, Sylhet Mir Mahbubur Rahman, also the Deputy Director of LGRD briefed the conference while other officials attended. He also said 51 families took shelter in two flood shelters whereas there are 190 centres in 13 upazilas in the district.

Meanwhile, the government had sanctioned 600 tonnes of rice, 2,000 packets of dry food and Tk 800,000 in cash for the affected people. Of the total, already 246 tonnes of rice and Tk 400,000 had been distributed among the victims till Tuesday.

As many as 140 medical teams were working in the affected areas under the supervision of Civil Surgeon while 57,000 water purifying tablets had been distributed. Another 150,000 tablets are on the stock.

A total of 245- metre embankments (not dam) breached on 15 points while partial damage took place on 5.0 km area. In total 3866 hectres of Aus paddy, seedbed of T-Aman and others had gone inundated in the district, the newsmen were informed.

Meanwhile, the state minister for Relief & Rehabilitation Enamur Rahman and Deputy Minister for Water Resources AKM Enamul Haque Shamim visited some of the affected areas in Sylhet region on Tuesday.

Enamur Rahman visited some affected flood protection embankments and distributed relief in Moulvibazar before attending the district disaster management committee there.

He also distributed relief at Biswambharpur upazila of Sunamganj and at Sylhet Sadar upazila. Shamim is also set to visit some affected embankment in Nabiganj of Habiganj on Thursday (Today).

The deputy minister for Water Resources also joined the relief distribution and visited flood control scheme in Moulvibazar. He then distributed relief in Chhatak and Biswambharpur upazilas of Sunamganj before joining the district Disaster Management Committee there.

Besides, he distributed relief at Sylhet sadar upazila before attending the district disaster management committee meet at Sylhet Circuit House. He is also set to visit flood control embankment on Nabiganj upazila of Habiganj district tomorrow (Thursday).
