Four girls drown in Tangail, Jamalpur ponds

TANGAIL, Dec 24 (BSS): Two schoolgirls drowned in a pond at Phultara village under Delduar upazila of the district on Sunday noon.

The deceased girls are identified as Dalon Akhter, 16, an SSC examinee and daughter of Babul Miah and her cousin Sriti Moni, 14, a student of class eight and daughter of Budu Miah, residents of Paikepara village of the upazila.

They came to visit their uncle's house at Phultara village.

Officer-in-Charge of Delduar police station Jahirul Islam said the girls drowned while they were taking bath in the pond.

When the girls went under water, Surovi, another cousin, tried to rescue them but failed.

After hearing Suravi's hue and cry the family members rescued them and took them to the Delduar Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared them dead.

Meanwhile, in Jamalpur, two other minor girls drowned in a pond in Elimpara village under Sadar upazila on Saturday evening.

The deceased were identified as Tasmia Tabassum, 8, daughter of late Hafizur Rahman, a resident of Elimpara village, and Jahia Khatun, 11, daughter of Jamal Hossain, hailing from Munshiganj district.

Quoting family sources, officer-in-charge of Jamalpur Sadar Police Station Nasimul Islam said Jahia came to the village with the family members of Tasmia few days back to enjoy the winter holidays.

Tasmia, a student of class III, and Jahia, a student of class VIII, went to take bath in the pond in the village around 1:30 pm and went missing.

Later, family members, after a frantic search, spotted the bodies of the duo floating on the pond.

A pall of gloom descended on the area following the incident.
