Four Sylhet, Moulvibazar colleges to come under special development project soon

SYLHET, June 25: Four colleges in Sylhet and Moulvibazar districts will come under a special development project soon.

The colleges are: Sylhet Government Women's College, Dakshin Surma Government College and Beanibazar Government College in Sylhet and Yakub-Tajul Women's College in Moulvibazar.

Sources said, no college from Habiganj and Sunamganj districts in the Sylhet division was selected for the project.

The World Bank-financed project styled 'College Education Development Project (CEDP)' is set to be implemented in 2019-2020 and 2020-2021, under the Ministry of Education and Bangladesh Open University, an official informed.

Tk 40 million would be spent for each of the first three colleges while Tk 20 million would be spent for the Yakub-Tajul Mohila College in Moulvibazar district.

There would be no construction of buildings or any other infrastructure, the official said. Besides, the sanctioned amount cannot be spent for payment of staff salary, allowance or anything like that, he added.

Rather it would be spent for institutional development purposes only. Under the project multi-media system introduction, audio visual system, modernisation of seminar hall, setting of e.library etc would be the main features, with a target for equipping the teachers and students with digital appliances for learning and teaching programme.

Overall classroom development work would be preferred mainly, the official added. As many as 74 colleges across the country have been selected under the project in three categories.

Md Shamsul Islam, principal of the South Surma Government College told this correspondent on Tuesday, "We have signed an agreement with the National University and the World Bank officials in the regard."
