Govt to convert Saidpur into fourth int’l airport

NILPHAMARI, Apr 10: Visible process has been started to convert Saidpur Airport into international standard. In that case it would be the 4th international airport of the country after Dhaka, Chattogram and Sylhet.

In the meantime billboard of the international airport has been posted in the gate of entrance of the airport. Reliable sources said government has taken the decision considering the geographic location of the airport.

Feasibility study has already been conducted by a team comprising two members of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism. The team comprised Chairman of Civil Aviation Air Vice Marshal Md Nayeem Hasan and member (operation and planning) Air Commodore Mostafizar Rahman.

The team accumulated the needed particulars about land acquisition, expansion of runway, terminal building and so on.

Sources said in the first stage a consulting farm of North Korea visited the airport about feasibility study.

When commissioned into an international airport it would provide air connectivity among sub-regional countries of Bhutan, Bangladesh, India and Nepal (BBIN) along with other international routes.

Sources said at present eight flights are being conducted daily both by Biman Bangladesh and private airlines of the country.

While contacted MD of Saidpur Airport Shaheen Ahmed said other works and formalities of construction work would begin soon.
