Groundnut production up in Nilphamari

NILPHAMARI, June 12: Groundnut harvest is nearing completion in the district as vast tract of char land has been brought under the farming of the crop.

A good number of farmers in the district said groundnut production is increasing for low cost and high profit.

It is popular mainly in the char land. Grassroots growers get high benefit from the item every season.

DAE sources said about 400 hectares of land were brought under the cultivation of groundnut. Production target is around 618 tonnes.

Sub-Assistant Agriculture officer Anil Chandro said the crop cultivation is becoming popular among the farmers for its low production cost, good yield and good market price.

Abdur Rahman of Itakhola union council under Sadar upazila said he cultivated groundnut on one acre of land this season.

He completed harvest and got 15 maunds of crop.

He said he sold all his produce at Tk 45,000 while his production cost was around Tk 15,000.

Per maund of groundnut is selling at Tk 3,500 in the local markets.
