Growers expect bumper maize yield in Jashore

JASHORE, Feb 05 (BSS): Officials of DAE and farmers are expecting a bumper maize production as the plants are growing excellent everywhere in the region this season.

A total of 88,624 hectares of land have been brought under the cultivation exceeding the target in six districts. The districts are Jashore, Jhenaidah, Chuadanga, Kushtia, Meherpur and Magura.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) had set a target for cultivating maize on 76,819 hectares of land whereas the farmers have finally brought 88,624 hectares under the cash crop farming in six districts.

Farmers cultivated maize on 638 hectares of land in Jashore district, 46,121 hectares in Chuadanga, 17,420 hectares in Jhenaidah, 8,475 hectares in Kushtia, 15,835 hectares in Meherpur and 135 hectares of land in Magura district.

Md.Emdad Hossain Sheikh, acting additional director of DAE Jashore region, said farmers got fair prices of maize during the last couple of years and as a result they are now eager to cultivate more maize on their land.

Emdad Hossain said bumper maize production is expected due to favourable weather conditions along with adequate supplying of necessary seeds, fertilisers and pesticides.

The government and non-government banks had already disbursed crop loans among the farmers to make the cultivation a complete success in the districts.

The farmer cultivated high yielding maize varieties- Kaberi, Super Shine-2760, Sunsine, Elite and Pioneer V-92 for boosting its production.
