Haor region needs to be developed without harming biodiversity

SYLHET, May 22: Speakers at an event in Sunamganj said the country's haor region needs to be developed without causing any harm to the nature, environment and biodiversity.

The haor should remain as it is, the ecology must be protected there as well, they said, however, basic requirements like education, health and communication should be facilitated to its people.

The workshop on 'Right of access of the landless and fishermen to the khas lands' was held at the conference room of the office of deputy commissioner on Tuesday.

The speakers focused on the huge potentials of the country's haor region. It produces large quantity of paddy and considerable amount of fish, but still there is a scope to ensure better returns through some basic initiatives, they said.

So there should be coordination among the government and non-government organisations, who are working on the country's haor region, the speakers noted.

Planned initiatives would surely ensure sustainable development of the backward region, they asserted.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue), Sunamganj Md. Shafiul Alam chaired it while the organiser NGO's Senior Programme Manager Amitava Halder presented the keynote paper.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education & ICT) Prodip Singha, Deputy Civil Surgeon Md. Ashraful Haque, Additional Deputy Director of the DAE Abdul Mannan, Revenue Deputy Collector Proshanta Dey, Fenerbak union Parishad chairman of Jamaganj upazila Karuna Sindhu Talukder, Dakshin Sripur Union chairman of Tahirpur Biswajit Sarker, CNRS's Jamalganj upazila Project officer Yahia Sazzad and District Cooperative Inspector Hironmoy Kar also addressed the workshop.
