BOGRA, Mar 05: Hundreds of chilli cultivators across the district have attained financial solvency as they get repeated bumper production and good market price every season.

Due to a good market price, a good number of farmers have showed their interest to expand green chilli farming, said sub-assistance agriculture officer Azizur Rahman.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said chilli farming has increased in the district in recent time. The department has been providing all necessary support, said farmer Amanur Rahman of Dakaher village under Dupchanchia upazila.

Farmers can make a profit of Tk 50,000 to Tk 60,000 from the production of a bigha of land.

The spicy item is being sold at Tk 2400 to Tk 2500 per maund in the retail market across the area. Traders from different districts across the country visit the area and purchase the item at Tk 2000 to Tk 2200.

Farmer Sabuj Mondal of Dawakola village under Sadar upazila said growers have started harvesting the vegetable from November last and will continue till April.

Deputy director of DAE Protul Chandra Sarker said chilli cultivation is popular here. "We encourage the marginal peasants to bring more land under the cultivation of chilli", he added.
