SYLHET, Mar 27: More than a hundred acres of land remained uncultivated this year on the vast Angaruli haor in Biswambharpur upazila of Sunamganj due to absence of irrigation facilities.

The affected farmers of at least 15 villages have demanded measures for irrigation facilities for cultivating the said area as they are the worst affected since once Boro paddy was the only crop of the area.

The farmers expect that steps would be taken to facilitate cultivating the crop lands in the coming year.

A team of officials including Md. Shahab Uddin Talukder, Superintending Engineer of BADC, Irrigation, Sylhet circle, Pronojit Kumar Deb, Executive Engineer, Sylhet region and Hussain Md Khaleduzzaman visited the area.

Assistant Engineer, Sunamganj visited the affected area on Sunday last to see the barren fields for themselves. The affected area spread in Badaghat (South) union under Biswambharpur and Balijuri union under Tahirpur upazila.

Badaghat union council chairman Md Ershad Mia and former chairman of Balijuri Md. Ataur Rahman, BADC's Misakhali Rubber Dam Management Committee secretary Humayun Kabir Mridha and some local leaders were present and requested the BADC officials for arranging some irrigation project for the area on an urgent basis.

The officials assured the farmers of looking into the matter as soon as possible and said steps would be taken for establishing an irrigation scheme in the area with a target to bringing the cultivable lands under Boro farming.
