Joypurhat farmers make good profit from spring onion cultivation

JOYPURHAT, Feb 18: A good number of farmers of the district have attained self-reliance by growing spring onion.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources, every winter farmers show their interest to cultivate spring onion for more profit. It has a good demand in the market. High price lures the peasants to grow the vegetable on more land.

Over 500 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of onion cultivation this season with an expectation to produce 340 tonnes of yield, DAE sources added.

In a recent visit this correspondent found each kg of fresh spring onion is being sold at Tk 20 to Tk 25 in the retail market while the wholesale rate is Tk 20 to Tk 22. A good quality of the vegetables are sent to different districts across the country.

Deputy director of DAE Sudhundranath Roy said spring onion cultivation is profitable due to low production cost. Marginal farmers can earn more by growing the popular vegetable item every season.
