GAIBANDHA, Apr 18 (BSS): Karotoa river bank protection work started at three points of Mohimaganj, Rakhalburuz and Darbasta unions under Gobindaganj upazila of the district on Tuesday.
The work would be done at Balua point under Mohimaganj union, Bishpukur under Rakhalbu-ruz union and Hatiadaha point under Darbasta union of the upazila, office sources said.
Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) is implementing the work at the points washed away last year due to the current of the river water, spending Tk 55 million.
Under the work, around 1,200 metre embankment would be repaired and protected at the points to save the standing crops of the neighboring areas from the floods, said an official of BWDB.
Local lawmaker Principal Abul Kalam Azad formally inaugurated the protection work of the embankment at Balua point under Mohimaganj union yesterday as the chief guest.
Executive engineer of BWDB Mahbubur Rahman, local UP chairman Abdul Latif Prodhan, political leaders and civil society members including journalists were present on the occasion.
Meanwhile, the construction of two bridges over the Ghagot Lake in the district town began on Monday amid much enthusiasm.
Jatiya Sangsad Whip Mahabub Ara Begum Gini, MP, inaugurated the work on the bridges as the chief guest.
Official sources said the 45-metre and 54-metre length RCC bridges are being constructed in Shashan Ghat and David Companypara areas of the town respectively at a cost of Tk 75 million.
The Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) is implementing the bridge construction project.
LGED Executive Engineer Abdur Rahim Shaikh, Gaibandha Pouasabha Mayor Advocate Shah Masud Zahangir Kabir Milon, pourasabha councilors and elite of the town including journalists were present on the occasion.
