SYLHET, Feb 02: Although the upazila heath complex at Komolganj in Moulvibazar was upgraded as a 50-bed one in March last year, the government-run hospital lacks minimum number of physicians and other staff while the scarcity of required instruments has been prevailing for long.

The medicare service is being hampered at the government institution for long as four physicians have to run the busy and bordering upazila hospital while the lone X-ray machine had been lying inoperative for long years.

Although the higher authorities in the Health department were informed of the problems time and again, there had been no effective initiatives to resolve those yet, a number of locals alleged.

Twenty posts out of 24 of physicians had long been lying vacant. Besides, the vacant posts include two nurses, one statistician, four pharmacists, one Sub Assistant Medical Officer, one Laboratory Assistant, one Radiographer, one assistant nurse, one cook had been lying vacant.

In absence of pharmacists, the peon and other staff have to do the job often, sources informed.

On the other hand, posts of 11 medical officers at sub centres in the upazila, One Assistant Health Inspector, one office assistant had been vacant for years.

An official in the health complex, however, said amid all these problems they were meeting the patients' requirements.

He said the higher authority was aware of the staff shortage and other problems. Some physicians would be appointed, hopefully.

About 300 to 400 patients are getting treatment at the hospital's outdoor department daily, the official claimed.
