NATORE, Nov 03: Commercial lemon cultivation has brought smile on the faces of hundreds of grassroots farmers in the district.

Sources said high profit and low production cost were the main reasons for the popularity of the fruit across the area.

Sub-assistance agriculture officer of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Azizur Rahman said lemon cultivation is profitable for high market demand. The department provides all necessary support in this connection.

The official further said a good number of farmers of the district have become self-reliant by growing the item on vast tracts of land.

Jillur Rahman of Boraigram upazila said, "I brought over 12 decimals of land under lemon cultivation two years ago spending Tk 12,000."

The farmer said he expects he would be able to harvest substantial number of lemons from his orchard from this season.

Each hali (four pieces) of lemon is being sold at Tk 12 to Tk 16 in the local market.

Deputy Director of DAE Rafiqul Islam said lemon farming is expanding across the district as the farmers can harvest the fruit round the year.
