Light trap pest control method gains popularity

NAOGAON, Oct 10: The eco-friendly light trap method for pest control is gaining popularity under Raninagar upazila of the district.

Instead of using chemical pesticides, growers are adopting light trap method during the ongoing Aman season due as it is easy to set up and has lower maintenance cost.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said some 16,455 hectares of land have been brought under cultivation of Aman paddy in eight unions of the upazila this year.

One Lokman Hossain of Khatteshwar village under the upazila said, "We did not have to use any pesticide so far this year as we did not detect any harmful insects in the paddy fields through the light trap method."

Farmer Jahidul Islam of Kashimpur village said, 'The cheaper and easy to use light trap method is helping us more effectively than the chemical insecticides."

Upazila agriculture officer Shahidul Islam said the light trap method has been contributing a lot to prevent pest attack and keep up the natural growth of the paddy plants for last few years in the upazila.

DAE is extending technical support to the farmers for using the light trap method, he added.
