SYLHET, Feb 25: Locals have made allegations regarding the large-scale irregularities in the crop protection embankments in Sunamganj district.

Wrong selection of places and the prevailing irregularities in formation of Project Implementation Committees (PIC) are the main allegations.

Concerned sources said the deadline for completing the work is February 28. But there is no possibility of completing the expensive project in the scheduled time.

Visiting different areas where at least seven schemes were under implementation amid large-scale irregularities at places like Korbannagar, Rongarchar, Surma, Mohanpur and Gourarang under Sunamganj Sadar upazila, activists of a citizens' forum named 'Haor Banchao, Sunamganj Banchao' lodged complaints with the district authorities. They also alleged none of these PICs had hanged sign board stating the sanctioned money and work detail, although it is set mandatory on the work site.

The forum on Saturday staged human chain and held rally in Alfat Square area to raise the protests. The speakers said there has been lack of coordination between the district and upazial administration and Water Development Board (WDB) in the works. Its president Bazlul Mazid Chowdhury Khosru chaired the rally while its advisor Matiur Rahman, Bikash Ranjan Chowdhury, Romendra Kumar Dey, Swapon Kumar Dev, vice-president Freedom fighter Abu sufian and General Secretary Bijon Sen Roy also addressed.

They said a number of locals alleged irregularities in the work. Besides, many of the schemes were found to be unnecessary and for just wasting public money.

Besides, there is no scope to finish the work by February 28 since things had been started late, the speakers added.

Meanwhile, a number of union council chairmen raised such allegations at a meeting of the upazila monitoring committee at Derai upazila council complex Friday afternoon in presence of lawmaker Dr Joya Sengupta.

The lawmaker assured of taking steps while asked all concerned for completing the crop protection embankments in time.

Meantime, four sub-assistant engineers of WDB were issued show-cause notices for their negligence in connection with the embankment work in Dharmapasha upazila on Friday. They had been asked to reply in three days.
