Low market prices dishearten Tangail cabbage growers

TANGAIL, Dec 29: Cabbage growers in the district are frustrated over the low market prices of their produce.

Sources said farmers in the area have achieved a bumper yield of cabbage.

Many grassroots growers in different upazilas of the district are now in difficult situation as newly-harvested cabbage is being sold at low prices.

Cabbage cultivation is popular in the district due to repeated bumper production.

Most of the farmers showed their interest in growing the winter delicacy to make good profit.

But low market rate is disappointing the peasants over the last two weeks.

Officials at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said some 1,050 hectares of land have been brought under cabbage cultivation this season with the production target of 33,600 tonnes.

During the recent visit in some local vegetables market of the town, this correspondent found that the growers are selling their produce at Tk 7.0 to Tk 15 per piece.

Nargis Akhter, sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE, Tangail, said cabbage cultivation is popular in the district. Farmers grow the item aiming in the winter aiming to make good profit.

Low market rate is disheartens them seriously, she added.

Shariful Islam of Gharinda union under Sadar upazila said some farmers are losing interest to cultivate cabbage next year for low market prices.

Forman Ali of Choubaria village said cabbage growers of the district will count massive losses if the present market rate continues.
